Job 4:5 But now trouble comes to you and you are discouraged; it strikes you and you are dismayed.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
Psalm 136:1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever.
It was quite a few years ago. I rather un-diplomatically stated at a church board meeting that I thought our church was great at fellowship, but we were lacking in spiritual growth. A few months later, the Pastor preached that “if you wanted to grow spiritually, you should start by being thankful.” I’m pretty sure he was staring right at me. I learned 2 things; first he was right, and second, I had discouraged him with my lack of appreciation.
In 2001 I became the CEO of my company. It took me a bit, but I soon learned that among my job responsibilities, I was to be the chief cheerleader and encourager. I could no longer just pass through the office expecting everyone to work well just as I expected the computers and copiers to function each day.
Ever been discouraged? Ever been disheartened by a teenage child who didn’t appreciate all you had done for them? Had a client or a customer who was impossible to please? Ever work very hard just to go to your review and have your boss ignore your hard work and achievements just to focus only on your shortcomings?
How do you think God feels? He is the author of life. He not only created this incredible world we get to journey through, he sent his Son to save us so we could live on when our travels here on earth are finished. For all he has done and continues to do, we scarcely notice. Our sin and lack of praise and appreciation must hurt him deeply.
This Thanksgiving don’t discourage God, be thankful. Encourage and be thankful to all those around you too. Look for the good in everyone, and everything. Your gratitude will be fulfilling, and help you grow more than you might imagine.
Happy Thanksgiving! Extra Touch Tours; Wilfred, Harriet, Rhonda, and Todd are all thankful for you.
